Comcast made me cry

Ok, I didn't actually cry, but it was pretty touch and go there for a while.

Naturally, when you move into any new place, you have to take care of the essentials. Unpacking. Changing your address. And, of course, setting up an internet connection. I could give you the big three hour ordeal that took place this morning, but that would bore both of us. Suffice to say, I was pretty upset when it wrapped up. I chose not to order anything from them, and I think this IM conversation with a friend of mine sums up why.

Me: I think I'm going to get DSL from Qwest.
Friend: Why bother with DSL? Isn't it easier to get cable from Comcast?
Me: Because Comcast pissed me off.
Friend: Fair enough.

So, that's the status right now, and I think I'll hold off on officially ordering cable TV for a bit too. Instead, I'll watch shows via iTunes. It's cheaper since I don't watch that much TV anyway, plus I can take the shows to the gym on the iPod and multitask. All in all, good solutions.

In other condo news, I unpacked six boxes last night, but you can't really tell. My cats are pretty excited about all the boxes because it's like catacombs for them. I think they'll be sad when I finally get it all put away. And speaking of cats, I took my first shower today with the new shower curtain. Those cats were watching me. Not sure how I feel about that.

FYI - still behind in email and LJ comment responses. Sorry. :(

Have you looked into Clear Wire? I'm happy with them.

Or I haven't read up too much on cell phone data plans, but the pricing for them has gotten a lot more reasonable than it used to be, so maybe you could go wireless hi-speed that way.

I have one word for you:

Clearwire!!!

http://www.clearwire.com/

If I didn't have outstanding business (read: editors) contacts on Comcast I would be done already and over to Clearwire.

Oh! Okay, the link. It was just back to the pic of your curtain. I was hoping, er, thought... Oh never mind. [vbeg]

I'd watch your step with Quest. Previous experiences with quest vs comcast have shown comcast more annoying and hard to deal with, but also more functional.

DSL really isn't as fast as Comcast's Broadband and that may be frustrating for you and your internet viewing future. I saw this with my father's recently purchased DSL through QWest in Salem. Pics that load almost instantly at home were taking forrrrevvvverrr to load there.

We opted to go this route with Comcast:
Broadband for the internet
Basic $8 bare bones cable in the 3rd bedroom we affectionately call the 'den' that never gets used. It saves us $10 on the bill to have a 'bundled' service.

For our viewing pleasure we use Direct TV via satellite dish. Other than heavily windy-rain storms we haven't had any issues with it.

Good luck!

Depends on what you want to do with your internet. If you're not downloading files or playing games then you should just go with whatever is cheapest and not worry about what is fastest. Just be sure you can hook up your desktop and use wireless for your laptop!

The cat shower curtain is still awesome. If you're worried about appearances, you can do like Icydol posted the other day and get a fancy curtain to hang in front of it.

I'm a complete stranger to your journal, but I had to post that I feel the pain about Comcast. I've never heard anything positive about their customer service. I blame, in part, the federal regulations that prohibit competitive cable coverage. Why should Comcast have good customer service when they know cable is the best product for internet access (by far) and they have no competition? But I'll quit the rant here...

Regarding the cat shower curtain, I'm not going to show that to my wife. We already have a cat that likes to walk into the shower and hangout while we are showering. While I love our cats, I imagine having a shower curtain like that would be disconcerting. But look on the bright side, its better than a reflective mirror shower curtain.
