Well, now you can! For a limited time only--by which I mean, um, forever--you can read Chapter 1 of Vampire Academy. But remember, kids: this is YA. Young adult. Snarky like Succubus Blues, but a little less explicit. So, if you're expecting excessive swearing, people being thrown up against walls in the heat of passion, and the witty banter we've all come to love in SB, be warned.

Well, actually, the witty banter is still totally there. Enjoy.

The excerpt is here.

I cannot wait to get VA. That was so exciting! I'm going to read that again in a few hours when I wake up more.

Would you mind if I asked you a question about posting a chapter to your website? Do you think it's ok to do that before you're published/represented? I thought about putting a chapter on my site, but wasn't sure if that was kosher...

Hey, there. I don't know any hard and fast rules, but I'd personally be hesitant to do it. With copyright laws, you're pretty much protected as soon as you write a word, but I'd feel better about posting something once the added protection of a publisher was in play. Using an excerpt to get critique in a writers forum or group would be a different matter.

Sorry I don't have a clearer answer!

Question - what makes you decide to make a story YA vs smutty more adult??

And thumbs up for the link - will read when I get home...

Not sure, honestly. It was suggested I try my hand at a YA, so I gave it a try. I wouldn't recommend doing this, though. I'd say write the story first, then pick your genre. Based on protagonist age and explicit content, you may find it goes better for one age group than another. Going in and planning on YA creates problems--I had some issues with VA in "playing by the rules." I'm happy with it, but in retrospect, I think this could have easily been an adult novel, 17-year olds or no.

I was thinking that. You seem to write "from the heart" and reigning in certain characters doesn't always bode well for the tale!

Thank you! I am excited about the YA novel, I have discovered how much fun it is to read and share with my thirteen year old daughter. It is great that you have done a YA novel. We will be sharing this one!

My god...
Hey this is the annoying Tony from myspace again. I know, you want to kill me. It's okay :D
I just read the excerpt. LOVED it. Me and my friend read it. We both find it awesome how you have curses in there and passion. Like, she admitted this guy was a hottie. I love Twilight, but that's one thing it doesn't have. Which is fine. But I still love it =]
