Movie type questions

Blood Promise
I'm back home from vacation, and just like after all trips, I'm SO glad to be back in my routine and familiar surroundings. Traveling is fun, but home is home for a reason. And unlike New Mexico, my home is set at about 5 ft altitude vs. 7000 ft, so I'm loving this oxygen, yo. Never realized what a difference that could make.

Anyway, the next few posts are going to be filled with vacation pictures, but before I subject you to those, I want to touch on some film stuff because the announcement about VA selling options has set my internet world buzzing. Here's a quick summary of important points:

* Selling film options means we now have a great production company (Preger Entertainment) and producer that can help make the book(s) into film. Me? I can't make a movie. My specialty is writing books. Theirs is making films happen, which is why we're lucky to have them on board.

* But, no film is being made yet. To do that, we need a lot of things: a script, a cast, and most importantly, a studio. Preger is currently pitching VA to studios, and when a studio picks it up, that's when all that other movie magic can happen. So, if you're hearing about filming taking place right now, it isn't true.

* Like I said earlier: I write books. I don't make movies, so I don't do the casting or directing or anything. People are writing to me about actor choices, but that'll be up to film makers when casting time comes.

* People are worried about differences between the book and a movie, but truthfully? It's impossible for any movie to be exactly like a book. Books are too long to put every page into 2 hours. So cuts and adaptations are always made. Some books turn into good movies; some don't. And of course, no actor will match every single person's vision of a character. It's just impossible.

* Will a movie "ruin the VA books"? I hear people worry about this too. The answer? Of course not! The books already exist, and I'll keep writing the way I want. Nothing will change them. :) A movie's a way of retelling them, and I wouldn't have signed with Preger if I didn't have faith in them doing something really awesome.

* How do we get this thing going? As mentioned, Preger needs a studio to get things started, and one of the best ways to get a studio's attention is to show the fan support. So, if you're on Facebook, join the Official Vampire Academy Movie Page. Its numbers are growing FAST, and it's really sending a message about VA-love. It's also where Preger puts official announcements and dispels rumors. Fans are starting lots of little movie pages, which is awesome, but please make sure to join up with the official one so there's an easy source to see all the fan support as a mass, rather than everyone being split in different places. Preger also has an Official VA Movie Twitter account.

* The Facebook page above is also a great place to discuss your thoughts about casting, what shouldn't be cut, etc. Even though there's no movie yet, Preger and I are both reading the comments there! If you're anti-Facebook, there's my Yahoo Mailing List too. Those are the best locations to discuss your thoughts rather than building long threads here in the comments.

I hope that clears up some of the questions! This is all very exciting, and in a lot of ways, I'm in as much suspense as you are. Film-making requires a lot of patience, but I know Preger and crew are already meeting with studios. So, keep your fingers crossed, and thanks for showing your support!

In unrelated but still cool news: Arcane Vault is now shipping shirts internationally, and I have it on very good authority (aka my own eyes) that some very cool new designs will be coming soon.

Stay tuned! Next time: Roswell pictures. :)

:: Applauds:: I like your take on movie adaptations! So many people whine about things getting changed in movies (even when it's something that had to be changed to make the book work better as a movie), but you've got the most balanced view of it that I've seen in a while. If someone claims a movie "ruined" a book, it may be that they're letting their opinion of the movie affect their opinion of the book. Granted, there have been some really wonky adaptations (2001 version of H.G. Wells's "The Time Machine"), but looking at it as a "retelling" is a very mature take on it! Thanks! And here's hoping a studio picks up Vampire Academy very soon!

I'm so excited! Shane things like this take forever to get off the ground. But I'll be waiting to hear all official news from you an Pregger and be ignoring message boards because the rumours are likely to drive me crazy!

Thanks for the update! It's so good to have someone involve in anyway giving us proper information, rather than just rumour after rumour!

This seems all so fast,I can only imagine how you feel.:D
I was reading this sofast that my mom noticed and was like, "Whats that?"
I told her it was the blog of my favorite author, and she saw your picture and went O_O "THAT is an author?
She's really pretty! You seem fascinated with this blog, tell me about the books."
e____e Even though it would be awkward reading about Dimitri with my mom,
I gotta say
I'm the worst explainer ever, but my mom seems pretty interested...

?
Is it wrong to be nervous? Cause I'm nervous. I just don't want there to be fan girls in the theatres, begging for Dimitri to take his shirt off. Perhaps the books will never change, but our feelings for the characters can. Our image of them, our thoughts about them can--oh, I hope this company takes good care of Dimka and Roza.

Re: ?
yes I agree, the actor can make us change our feeling for his character... In Twilight they made me hate the Cullens...I don't want this to happen with Dimitri and Rose :(
I don't know why but i think it's more easier to ruin these two than the other characters, so they have to be very careful in choosing the actors.

Yeah the thing with movie adaptations is the books will always be better because of the detail! That's why we're obviously all book lovers but I know studios try and keep in the best parts of the book but have to leave stuff because of time and maybe even budgets! I'm looking forward to who they cast (if all goes ahead) because usually they end up casting people perfectly.. these are the professionals and well I can't think of any hollywood actor right now to play any of the parts perfectly so I am sure we can trust that they will find some actors, even unknown ones, who will bring the story to life :)

Thanks for keeping us updated though, it's great! Do you have any news on what they're doing with the rights for Georgina? I would kill for a Georgina show or movie ha.

OHOHOH!
I am so very excited and happy for you! Just finished rereading the, so far, 5 books and will probably do so a hundred more times until the 6th one comes out. But a movie?! THAT'S EXCITING. Even if things from the book change, I'm sure the movie will still be awesome. And seriously, if the movie ruins your idea of the book, then don't watch the movie again, just reread the book. That's what I do when a movie totally ruins a book for me. lol But seriously, ahhh! Excited. <3 <3

I'm definitely excited about VA getting adapted into a movie. I do of course have some concerns. The cast. They ALWAYS get this wrong! You have to have a say in the cast! You also HAVE to put a stop if they get out of hand with the story. Or in other words, they mess up the whole story just like they did with Vampire Diaries.
(Anonymous)
Dec. 1st, 2010 04:46 am (UTC)
I KNOW RIGHT! They totally messed up the Vampire Diaries, I can't believe they did that. I freaked for like a week after the shows came out because they do so awful. Now the show is nothing like the book, I'm so sad because it had a really good story and they just through it away. So now people who read the book hate it and people who didn't love it. It's not fair. :(

It's awesome that movies are coming up. But I think that the person that could choose the cast the best would be the author. You can choose actors and actresses that close resemble the characters you created as you imagined them. I just hope you'll oversee the films because it's happened way too many times where the story is changed in the first movie and chances of future films are ruined.

I don't mean to be aggressive or anything, I'm a huge fan and love your books! Keep writing because you are awesome!!!

I'm so excited! These books are one of my top favorite series! I hope everything works out.
Even if the movies aren't exactly like the books, which they rarely are, then that can't sway how much I LOVE VA. :D

Ps. Spirit Bound was AWESOME!!! Every chapter left me on my toes. I can't wait to see what happens to Rose!

love the series
I started to read the Vampire Academy books last week and I love them all. I'm glad to hear that there is going to be a movie based on the series. Hopefully, we don't have to wait too long for the movie. Will there be several movies made? I can't imagine all the books fitting into a two hour movie, but I honestly wouldn't mind watching a six or seven hour movie based on the series as long as a few intermissions here or there are include. I can't wait to read the last book. Thanks for writing such an awesome series.

Re: love the series
I love the series. I wouldn't mind sitting through a six or seven hour movie either. Maybe it can be made into more than one part like what was done with the 7th Harry Potter movie. That would be a wonderful way to get more details in.

I'm so excited. Vampire Academy is my all time favorite series. I definitely can't wait to see it as a film. I know it won't be the same, but I don't think it will ruin my perception of the books. You're right! No movie is ever like the book and the characters will never be like how I imagine them.

thoughts
I think it is great that Richelle decided to tell the story in 6 books and not drag it on and on until there really was no story left to tell. Too many authors do that. I read the first couple of books then by book 6 or 7 totally lose interest because it stops making any sense and there is no cohesion. Vampire Academy is so much better written than Twilight. Would love it if a movie were made of VA.
